GWYNESS STARED UP AT the ceiling of the tent. The female half-elves were fast asleep already, but she could not quiet her restlessness. Her eyes slowly looked to the nearest corner. Before they had taken on the half-elves, the women’s tent would be well lit, even at night. Now, all they would leave lit was a single hanging candle from the center of the tent. It created plenty of corners for shadows. Gwyness was convinced that something else was stirring in their tent. Had one of the new phooka shape-shifters crawled into the tent to frighten her with an evil prank—or worse?

Her eyes adjusted to where she had focused them. A figure stood in the shadows.

“Gwyness.” She heard the whisper and abruptly sat up in her trussing bed.

“Lady Aylen?” she asked, keeping her voice low.

A hooded cloak fully covered the figure, but Gwyness knew it was the princess.

“I am sorry, Gwyness, that I did not come sooner.”

“It is fine, m’lady. You are here. How are you?”

“I am better, better than yesterday, and tomorrow, I will be better than today. I cannot express in words what I have been experiencing. I know now how the caterpillar feels in its transformation.”

“But you are now the butterfly.” Gwyness was crying but smiling.

“Yes, I am. All these years of growing up, Gwyness, I thought I was an elf. Mr. Traveler was right to frighten me, to get my mind in the proper place. I was nowhere near, in body or mind, being an elf. I have no words for it.”

“But you can return now. I can help you.”

“Yes, it was cruel of me to stay away so long. But our caravan begins its journey anew.”

“Yes, at dawn. Have you seen all the new fae in our caravan?”

“Yes, it is very impressive what Mr. Traveler has helped us assemble.”

“He did say that nothing would keep our caravan from moving ahead.”

“And he was right.”

“Will you set out with us tomorrow? Please say yes. Everyone wants to see you. They all ask about you daily. ”

“Yes, so my ears tell me. I will see. If I am feeling strong and in good spirits, I will. Mr. Traveler told me that he has a surprise for me if I show myself tomorrow.”

“Surprise? What is it?”

“Mr. Traveler. He is as mischievous as any fae. He would not tell me.”

“Then you must join us.”

“I am tempted. I cannot deny it. Well, Gwyness, you get your sleep.”

“I will now that I know you will be returning.”

“Yes.”

Gwyness lying back down but then abruptly sat back up. Lady Aylen had vanished into the shadows of the tent.
