Alex stayed in detention for the full ninety days. When he came out in early 1964 he went back into house arrest. From 1962 until we left the country in 1966, each time he was detained he was released back into house arrest. He went from prison on the outside to prison inside his home.

Though Alex was never physically tortured, he was mentally tortured – hour after hour of questioning, and always threats. Alex and I didn’t speak to each other about our interrogation because we were still working clandestinely in different cells. Talking might have given away our association with particular comrades and made us vulnerable in further detentions. I did, though, tell Alex how the Special Branch had threatened me with Eugene’s illness.

Incredibly, the Special Branch returned our books to my mother while we were still in prison, even the works of Marx and Lenin. I’m sure they didn’t read them. If they did, how much could they have understood?
