CHAPTER 15

Taylor went back to the cruiser, got in, and backed out of the driveway. The next house was a few miles ahead. She was glad to be out working alone today. It gave her time to think. Not only about the investigation, but also about Lucy and how to approach her, if she could even find her.

First, though, Taylor needed to get something fresh to bring back to Shane and the sheriff, or she might never get to work on another investigation again.

She had read once that solving nearly any crime depended on something that seemed to bear nothing related to the crime at first glance. Today, she planned to talk to as many neighbors around the Higgin’s farm as she could find.

She had already stopped by and talked to a few, driving more than fifteen miles away, asking them to think back to that day and tell her everything they remembered.

Every noise. Every car. Every person.

Every anything.

So far, her notes consisted of mundane things that everyone saw in the country.

Mail carrier and the Fed Ex truck.

Kids on a four-wheeler going by.

Propane truck out for deliveries.

So and so plowing their field, or a neighbor walking their dog.

Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary and no strangers or unrecognized vehicles. Penner had already questioned the mail route carrier and the Fed Ex employee. They’d see nothing on their routes that day, either.

It was infuriating. They were missing something.

People were still nervous, too. Several had to go through multiple deadbolts before opening the door to her. That was something different for most of Hart’s Ridge residents, who prided themselves on not even locking their doors during the day.

Taylor always recommended people lock their doors. Now too many things could happen. All they had to do was turn on the evening news or an episode of “Dateline” to see that tragedy was lurking around every small town.

She pulled into the road next to a mailbox with Dobbs written across it in white paint.

The Dobbs were an older, quiet couple. They’d once farmed on their land, raising goats and donkeys, selling them off, but like many of Hart’s Ridge's older population, they gave it up once it got too physically demanding. They had children, but the farm wasn’t in their dreams to take over and they’d built their careers elsewhere.

Taylor saw Clarence Dobbs occasionally in town at the Den, picking up dinner to take home for him and Lynn to eat. She didn’t come out much at all and Taylor couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen her.

There were no more animals there and as she drove up to the house, everything was eerily quiet.

She shut off the car and climbed out, looking around to make sure no dogs were coming after her before she shut the door.

All was clear so she went up to the porch and knocked.

Lynn opened the door a crack, then all the way when she saw Taylor. But her eyes were wide with worry.

“What is it, Taylor? Is there another murder?”

“No, no, Mrs.
