Charley folded the letter neatly placing it back in the envelope. She stood up and walked to her door then back to the bed. The envelope seemed to be staring up watching her every move as she paced in her bare feet on the cool concrete floor. Running a hand through her hair, she took a deep breath, sat back down on the bed, and opened the envelope again. She studied the feminine curves of the loopy handwriting as her chest tightened. This was the last thing she needed. She didn't want contact on purpose. She didn't want to be reminded, not of the bombing, the deaths, or the magical feeling of falling in love with a beautiful woman. Being in the middle of a war wasn't all sunshine and roses and writing a letter pretending it was just wasn't worth her time. Charley balled the letter up and tossed it in the box in the corner that doubled as a wastebasket, and reached for the bottle under her mattress.

The golden liquid sloshed in the bottle of whiskey Charley had traded her watch for as she pressed it to her lips and tipped it up. She never cared for the watch to begin with and time seemed to move at a snail's pace since she arrived on Midway. A small glass bottle of cheap whiskey was well worth the trade. Charley drank a few long swigs from the bottle and put the cork back in it. Swinging her legs up on the bed, she leaned back against the wall.

"Happy St. Patty's Day," she said to the empty room.
