Fifteen

He threw the envelope back at me.

“What do you intend to do with this?”

“I don’t know yet.”

He frowned. “Don’t do anything crazy, John.”

I watched him open his mouth three or four times. It was the first time I had ever seen him lost for words. Finally he picked up his glass and set it down again.

“John, we have never been friends, we have always been on opposite sides of the divide, but you should know that I have always held you and Carmen in the highest esteem. There are cops, a few of them, that I have worked with, and have cooperated with me, if you know what I mean. But you, you and Carmen, I have always known you both to be solid. Don’t go off half-cocked. Keep your cool until you know for sure what has happened.”

I looked at him like he was crazy. “For sure?” I held up the photographs. “This is not sure?”

He looked pained but didn’t answer.

I left the envelope on the table, with the writing visible, and jerked my head at the evidence bag. “What about that?”

He eyed it a moment. “There are plenty of labs that can process it for us. There are a couple we use. I’ll see to it.”

“Listen,” I said, glancing over at the door, conscious that Dehan was about to appear at any moment. “Is there anything I need to know about Gottlieb?”

He shrugged and spread his hands, like he was surprised at how stupid my question was. “Like what?”

I outlined what I had seen that day. He rolled his eyes. “What? They suspend you for a couple of weeks and suddenly you’re some kind of amateur now? Come on! The maniacs in the upper classes of business survive on a diet of coke. If they didn’t, they would go crazy. They build up unbelievable levels of stress, so they need these crazy things to relieve that stress. There is nothing to be read into that meeting, believe me. I don’t do it anymore. It was never my scene, but when I was younger, if a Colombian or Mexican client came over, what were you supposed to do? You can’t turn them down because that would offend them. So you play along. It’s just business, John.”

“Don’t sidetrack me, Saul! The gun, the bedding, the blood, framing Dehan for crying out loud! None of it ties together! Whether she did it or whether she is being framed, either way, neither way makes sense. What is the motive here?”

He sighed. “Some people kill professionally, John. It’s their job, they are experienced and they do it for monetary gain. But those people are very rare. Nine times out of ten murder is not intellectual, it is emotional. The people most likely to murder each other are people who are in love. With love, logic goes out the window. I hate to say this, and in my heart I do not believe it, but if she was in love with this guy, and she killed him, you may be sure that she was out of her mind when she did it.
