Chapter Twenty Six
The decision having been made to leave at once for the new realm, preparations were sped up. Lori pointed out that food and drink would be no problem and their camp should still be on the other side. Somehow the starting of the Melengus seemed far more frightening than it had been the first time. With the clocks set again for one hour the ghastly machine sparked into formidable life.
Dressed in his peculiar outfit with a gold-coloured plastic cross on his head and a carving knife in his belt, Archie led his small army into the interface. They arrived in the green world at night. The only light available came from the glow around the edge of the interface. The trees looked like great sentinels guarding the strange land with their arms outstretched, encompassing the black sky.
“I’ll start a fire,” Lori said and ran to the tent area.
The camp was just as they had left it. Neither animal, human, nor spirit had touched anything. Lori quickly got a fire going, it’s light adding to the ghostly atmosphere with its flickering shadows. Archie explained the use of the three different types of bombs he had produced. The drinking straws were stuffed with powder and acted as the fuse. Archie thought the fuse would give about four to five seconds before the bomb detonated.
“The large bomb will kill people and destroy structures,” he explained. “The medium one will kill if it’s close enough but the small one should not be fatal.”
“Can we test one now?” Albert asked with sparkling eyes.
“No, we’ll keep them until we need them – no point in wasting resources.”
“How do we know they will work?” Lori asked.
“Believe me,” Archie said. “The technology is simple. I know they will work. Light the fuse and throw it. You should be at least 10 metres from the big one when it goes off or you could be injured.”
Lori looked at her six. “They are awfully heavy. Do we really have to carry them around with us?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Archie demonstrated by tying a short piece of string to each one of his and then attaching them to his waist belt. “If you use a bow you can untie each one quickly. I would recommend being very careful with the matches or you could be blown to smithereens by accident and that would be very messy.”
“Do we go now or wait for daylight?” Albert asked.
Archie thought for a moment. “The time here is different. I don’t know when daylight is due. Maybe we should wait for it to get light.”
“Are you afraid of the dark?” Lori snapped.
“No. But we don’t want to get lost, do we?”
Archie spread out his sleeping blanket near the fire but outside the tent and laid back on it. He intended to rest for a little while until he could discover the time of dawn, then he could reset his watch. The comfort, warmth and serenity induced sleep. As if in a wink of an eye the darkness turned to dawn.
