Chapter 20

Verum reappeared in the Great Hall, where he had last left the assembly of Watchers. Isdemus’s was the first face he saw.

“Good news!” Verum exclaimed. Without another word, he thrust the piece on paper on which Angela had written Calypso’s name toward Isdemus, who took it and read it. He frowned.

“What is this?” he asked.

“The name of the penumbra with Lily and Peter. And that’s not all,” he said, and hurriedly explained what Angela had told him about how to get to the Island of the Blessed.

“The Temple of Delphi?” repeated Jael skeptically.

“Vell, zere is a portrait in ze Commuter Station zat goes zere, right?” said Fitim.

Jael scowled. “Yes, but it seems very strange that you should be able to get to a mythical island through a temple made famous by a false prophet.”

“Vas she false?” said Agim. “I did not know zat.”

Masika ventured, returning to the topic at hand, “But once you get to the temple, how will you get to the island from there?”

Verum had been just about to answer, but Bruce cut him off. “‘What do you mean, how will you get to the island?’” he asked pointedly, looking at Masika. “Do you not plan on coming with us?”

“Of course she is coming, we need her,” said Isdemus, with a tone of finality. “She is our space specialist now.”

Everyone fell silent for a moment, at the reference to Sully. Masika did not dare challenge him.

Verum finally answered Masika’s question, “Angela didn’t know how to get to the island from the temple. I figured at that point you could just read the penumbra’s name off that paper,” he said, gesturing to Isdemus, who still held the paper with Calypso’s name printed on it.

“And what, you think he’ll just come and get us, and take us straight to Peter and Lily?” asked Jael with a frown.

“Well, he claims to be on their side, so he’d have no good excuse not to take you to them,” Fortis pointed out.

“But if he comes without them, then he could refuse and they’d be none the wiser,” said Dan.

Isdemus held up a hand again to silence the group. “It is the best plan we have,” he said. “We can only hope that whatever plan this penumbra has includes keeping Lily and Peter alive, at least for the moment.” Then he stood, signaling that the others should follow him to the Commuter Station at once.

Eustace had not budged from his position under the table from before Verum went to Sumer. He watched this exchange back and forth, like a volleyball match, and could stand it no more. He rose first to a crouch, and then bounced up and down on the balls of his feet. “Oooh, can I come? Pleeease? I can help! I know I can!”

“No!” they said all at once.

Eustace blinked at them, taken aback. “I was just asking, geez…”

Somehow in spite of the gravity of the situation, Isdemus managed a smile.
