âHereâs your chance.â Flora announced proudly to Fern when news of the ball reached them. âYou can help your girl to win the prince.â
âThat is not our power. You know that. We can only help them to become the best of themselves. It must already be within her to win the prince Flora.â Fern retorted.
âYes, but she is fair, and gentle, and kind...is she not?â
âShe is. Though I daresay they have tried to take that from her too.â
âThen you really donât need to do much. Just arrange for the meeting to happen.â Flora reasoned.
âThat may be a tall order.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThe step-mother. She is evil. She manages to cut the girl down without thought. The one thing the girl had, she has just learned was taken from her too. I donât know if I can mend that kind of emotional damage.â Fern lamented.
âYou can. If any of us can, itâs you.â Flora bolstered.
âI can try.â Fern said doubtfully. âI can try.â
Chapter 9
Word of the ball reached the Beaufort home. Bella determined immediately that she would be there. She would show Prince Christopher just what he was missing out on, and remind him that he was promised to her.
Weeks on end were spent with everyone in the household fretting about. Bella changed her mind on her dress no fewer than a dozen times, though probably more. The finest everything was acquired and finally worked into a dazzling dress, travelling cloak, and matching golden slippers, trimmed with fur.
A new carriage was purchased as well. The old one, though gilt and beautiful, was not acceptable to Bella, and her parents were doubling over trying to please her as much as the servants. The horses too were groomed and re-groomed in anticipation. Only when Bella approved, were they allowed to rest in anticipation of harvest night.
It still was not enough. Bella wanted more. She was nearly, but not yet eighteen, and thus, she knew, she still had a Fairy Godmother. She may have dismissed her, but she had to be nearby. âFloooorrraaahhhhh.â She bellowed.
Floraâs head hung low before she crossed over. She had been waiting for this. Arriving before Bella, there was no clue that she did not wish to be present. âYou called?â
âI want you to make me beautiful.â Bella demanded.
âI cannot.â Flora replied factually.
âYou can. You just donât want to.â
âNo. I cannot. I can only help you to become what you already are. Are you beautiful?â
âOf course Iâm beautiful.â Bella snipped. âThatâs not what I mean.â
âThatâs what you said.â
âI mean, make me irresistible.â
âI cannot do that either.â
âYouâre impossible Flora.â
Flora didnât respond.
âFine!â Bella finally recanted. âTell me how to become irresistible.â
âI cannot say. I donât believe I know that.â
âYou do. Make the Prince fall in love with me.â
âI most certainly cannot do that.â
Bella scream-squealed. âWhat CAN you do?â
âIâve already answered that. I can help you to become what you already are.â
âWhatâs that?â
âYou tell me.â
âIâm rich.â
âThen you donât need me for that.â
âIâm beautiful.â
âAgain, donât need me for that.â
âThen how do you make me become what I already am?â
Bella whined.
