away to help Jason and Engineer Clarke work

on the defensive systems. Flame sat alone in the

house, sipping tea and worrying. He didn’t have

anything else to do which made him feel totally

useless. He got up, glanced out the front window,

went back to his seat and sat staring at nothing.

Time crawled along, the sun sliding ever

closer to the horizon, though it seemed to move

at a pace slower than a tortoise trying to climb

the wall of a canyon. He didn’t like being alone.

I gave him nothing to do but fret about so many

things, not the least of which was his upcoming

fight with Dragonwind. There were so many

things to do, yet he hadn’t been asked to help,

which left him feeling more useless than ever.

A sound reached him through the quiet

outside and inside. He tipped his head and

listened, trying to figure out what he was hearing

then he knew: the sound of a workbike laboring

along with a dying sunstone in the engine. His

had sounded like that so many times that the

noise had been a nearly constant companion. He

got to his feet and hurried to the door wondering

who’d be about on the streets using a vehicle close

to shutting down from lack of power.

A young man in the garments of a clansman—

one Flame had never seen—came to a stop in

front of the house. He snarled a curse at the bike

and kicked it in a fit of frustration as the machine

gave out the soft crack of a sunstone that had

broken into pieces.

“Stupid damned thing,” the young man

muttered and turned to see Flame regarding him

from the open doorway.

“Is there something I can help you with?”

Deep brown eyes regarded him for a moment

while Flame took in the young man’s appearance.

There were pale blue tattoos on his cheeks

that ran down his neck and vanished beneath

the heavy leather of the darbear hide coat he

wore. The leather pants he wore looked to have

been fashioned of goat skin, while the boots

on his feet were also darbear. “I’m Sandsong

Windcaller,” the young man—he couldn’t have

been more than eighteen—replied. “A clansman

named Zephyr sent me to find Chief Flamespirit

Dragonfire.”

“That’s my name,” Flame replied. “What does

Zephyr want?”

“He says the Four Winds urgently need your

help,” Sandsong Windcaller replied.

Something about the young man’s

name abruptly impinged on Flame’s mind.

“Windcaller? Are you somehow related to

Windspinner Bearbane Windcaller?” he asked.

“Yes, he’s my cousin on my mother’s side,”

Sandsong replied. “I haven’t seen him since I was

five or six years old though. My parents don’t

get along with him.” Sandsong shrugged, “They

never said why. He gave me a darbear skin I used

to sleep under. I had it made into this coat last

summer.”

Flame nodded and motioned the Sandsong

to follow him inside. If he was going to go help

the Four Winds he needed to have more on than

pants and a shirt. “Did the Four Winds say what

they need?”

Sandsong shook his head.
