CHAPTER 15

“Back again, are ye?” Father Benson eyed me grumpily. “Trying to have another go and frightening me–” he cut off, and started to cough. I waited patiently, but the coughing fit didn’t stop.

Patience quickly turned to alarm. Benson covered his mouth with a brown handkerchief and coughed as if his lungs were going to come up.

“Are you okay, Father?”

He hacked and coughed one more time. “Fine,” he said, tucking his handkerchief back in his pocket.

But not before I saw a patch of wet, bright-red blood on it.

I swallowed heavily. “I brought Leroy with me,” I said, pushing him into the rectory. “I saw that your antenna was broken on your T.V. Leroy’s a tech wiz,” I explained. “He can fix it.”

“He can, can he?” Benson eyed him beadily. “I suppose you could have a go, lad.”

“It might take him an hour or so, Father,” I said. “I was wondering if I could ask you something in the meantime?”

“Shoot.” He backed himself into his squashy brown sofa and bent his knees, falling back at the same time with an oof.

“I don’t suppose I could borrow your exorcism book, could I?”

“What in the hell do you need that for, child?”

I shrugged. “Research?”

“Into what?”

“Exorcisms?”

He eyed me beadily.

“For what?”

“I’m… uh… writing a book.”

He frowned, crumpling up his face into a mass of wrinkles. “You are a terrible liar.”

“It’s true. I’m writing a book. It’s an erotic novel about exorcisms.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Erotic, is it?”

I nodded. “It might hurt you to know this, but demon romance novels are very popular right now.”

“Ugh,” his face screwed up. “Don’t tell me. I think I could happily go to my grave without knowing that.”

“Wait until you hear about reverse harem demon romance novels,” I muttered under my breath.

“What?”

“Nothing.” I cleared my throat. “So anyway, can I borrow your book on exorcisms, father? Oh, and if you have it, can I also have the Church's secret list of demon names?”

He stared at me beadily, not blinking, for several moments. I fidgeted awkwardly.

“Do you know how hard it is to do an exorcism?”

I nodded. “I do. It’s… uh… going in my book.”

“Then you’d know that people die all the time performing them. You’d know that they’re not for the faint of heart.”

I nodded. The only time I’d ever performed one, I would have died too. If I had been mortal, my heart would have stopped. All that demonic energy played havoc on the body’s electrical systems, and it was a one-way ticket to cardiac arrest.

“What are you up to, young Imogen Gray?”

I sighed heavily. “Nothing you need to worry about, Father.”

“Nothing I need to worry about? You come here asking about exorcisms,” he grumbled. “That’s my wheelhouse, you daft bint. It’s my business. You want to know about performing an exorcism, that’s something I’m going to worry about.”

I looked at him frankly. His blue eyes were buried so deep in the saggy folds of his eyelids, but they still twinkled with intelligence and mischief.

He was so old, though. I couldn’t get him involved in this.
