John James Audubon , an American naturalist, produced these striking illustrations as part of a collection entitled ‘Birds of North America’ in 1827. Widely regarded as the father of full-colour natural history illustration, his attention to detail, lifelike poses and characterizations set precedents that devalued the work of his contemporaries whose imagery bore too much resemblance to their taxidermic reference material.
