Chapter Eight

“HOW DID you talk me into this?” Victor throttled back on the engine of Abraham’s personal airship.

“Cause and effect. You need a bit of a break. I can’t remember when I’ve seen such tired eyes. Exhaustion requires a bit of rest. Besides—” Abraham flashed a smile as tired as he claimed Victor’s eyes were. “—you wanted to fly my baby. I thought it would wait until after the case ended, but now seemed better.”

“Mostly this thing flies itself. It’s amazing.” Victor looked down on the Hudson River. The view was beautiful. He wished he didn’t have the case to worry about so he could fully enjoy the trip. The time alone with Abraham was more than he could hope for. “You’re spoiling me,” Victor said, adjusting the goggles Abraham had given him.

“I hope you don’t think I’m trying to influence you on this case.”

Hearing the worry in Abraham’s voice, Victor turned to face him. “I wouldn’t have come up here if I had any evidence implicating you. I came to talk to the children.”

“I’m sorry they were all down in the city with their Great-Aunt Grace. We thought they could use a change of setting for a day or two. I could send word to have them come home now.”

“Tomorrow will be fine. I have other leads to follow up once we set back down. I suppose I shouldn’t have let you talk me into this flight, but I couldn’t resist.” Victor tugged the brim of his borrowed flight cap down, shielding his eyes. The goggles did little to dampen the bright sunlight.

“You need an hour to yourself. It’s wonderful up here, isn’t it? Looking down from here, I feel like the master of the Earth. Does that make me arrogant?”

Victor looked over at Abraham. Abraham’s longish hair had escaped the flight cap in wild tendrils. “Your inventions earn you the right to a little arrogance.”

Abraham laughed, leaning closer to Victor. He thought Abraham wanted to be sure to be heard clearly over the hum of the engines since Abraham was so close to him. The press of Abraham’s body against his shoulder destroyed Victor’s ability to think. Instead of continuing the conversation, Abraham kissed Victor. Too stunned to do anything, Victor didn’t pull away. The bright spark in Abraham’s eyes was hooded when he shut his eyes. The kiss robbed Victor of reason even more than Abraham’s closeness had. Victor swore he felt pure desire flowing into him from Abraham’s wind-chapped lips. The roughness of Abraham’s mouth did nothing to lessen the wonder of this moment.

Abraham wrapped an arm around Victor’s waist, and he deepened the kiss. Victor returned it, opening his mouth to let Abraham’s probing tongue inside. Abraham’s mouth demanded all of Victor’s attention, but Victor’s cock demanded the same. Ignoring his own body’s needs, Victor brushed his hand down over Abraham’s hip and across the man’s erection. Like lightning from a storm-torn sky, it hit Victor how wrong this was. He pushed Abraham back, breathing hard.
