Gloomy images danced mutely across the TV screen. “I love that picture of you on the back cover with the mummified cat,” I said, trying to keep the conversation going.
“Oh, you do?” Rozz responded, pleased. “Just wait here a minute. I’ll be right back.”
Rozz disappeared into the back of the cottage and returned with a cardboard box in his hands. He sat down again.
“Sit next to me.”
“Okay.” Rozz opened the package as I knelt down and sat beside him. He removed the beautifully mummified cat I had just mentioned.
“I thought it was just a prop. I didn’t think it was real!”
“I call her Pam.”
“Oh, my God!”
“Here, you can hold her. She feels just like beef jerky.” Without any hesitation, I was now holding Pam, the desiccated cat. The body was hairless and dark brown. Her bony tail curled like a comma. She was as fragile and light as a dead leaf.
“We had the property fumigated for termites and the exterminator found Pam under the house. She’s been with me ever since.”
I handed “Pam” back to Rozz and realized then that I had been gone from the party for about twenty-five minutes, Annie and Suzy would be looking for me.
I didn’t want to leave, but I felt like I had to go.
“Well, I have to get back and help my friends look for Scott. I won’t tell anyone that you’re back here. It was really great talking to you, Rozz.”
“Likewise, Matt.” And as I was standing up, Rozz pulled me over close to him and kissed me square on the lips.
Just like that.
He searched my eyes and then let me go, turning his handsome face away from me.
I just about died right there.
Speechless, I stood up and hurried out into the backyard night, not even looking back once. * * * *
Inside at the party, I found Annie talking to Rhino and Lily.
“No one has seen Scott for about a week,” Annie informed me. “That’s strange,” I said, my mind instantly wandering back to the tickets for the Love and Rockets concert.
“He hasn’t been at work,” Rhino said.
“What the hell?” Suzy continued. “You don’t think he intentionally ripped us off, do you?”
“I mean, he’s risking losing his job for like $60.00? That doesn’t sound like something someone would do intentionally,” Lily observed.
“Maybe he’s still coming here. He said he would.” Annie tried to sound positive.
“I think there is some kind of misunderstanding.”
“I’m sure he’ll turn up,” Rhino promised.
“What are we going to do if he doesn’t? We’re out both the money and the tickets.”
“I don’t know.” “We still can try the scalpers.” “Yeah, but they charge like $50.00 a ticket. I can’t afford that.”
“He’ll show up. It’s only like 11:00 P.M.”
“Yeah, there’s still a lot of time.” I handed Annie and Suzy their plastic cups and we exited the living room for the kitchen again. We were strangely afraid of using any of Ivy’s ice, so we mixed our vodka with the OJ we found in the refrigerator straight.
“Oh, God, I am so stupid.
