Chapter 17

Blake

The Montreal Lynx were a lot like the Barracudas, young and hungry. They had phenomenal skills, played fast and clean, and boasted one of the best coaches in the league. We were more consistent in our play, but they were an excellent team and beat us regularly. Tonight, they had a 3–2 advantage in the second period. Our first line raced around, looking for a chance to score and tie up the game. Nick was eventually able to take a shot, but it went wide. We’d barely recovered from the disappointment when Kev forced a turnover from one of Montreal’s forwards and rushed toward the Lynx’s goal, dodging players left and right.

Mark raced down the side of the rink, matching Kev for speed but staying close to the boards on his left. When he turned right toward the goal, Kevvy fired a pass to where Mark would be in another second; Mark shot off the pass and slammed the puck into the corner of the net. After a short celly, he was glowing when he skated by the bench. His expression barely changed when he touched my glove, but his eyes had a sparkle I knew was just for me. Things had changed so much in such a short period of time. Only a few weeks earlier, I may not have even held up my glove as he went by.

Coach called for a line change, and Caldy, Stouffy, and I hopped over the boards. Gags and Ferrell followed to back us up on D. We proceeded to center ice, and I steeled myself when Montreal’s first line arrived. They were all good, and the center had won the Hart Memorial Trophy last spring—most valuable player to his team. We’d have our work cut out for us.

Stouffy eyed his left-wing counterpart and did a double take. “Dude, does your coach know you’re out here?”

The guy sneered. “Growing any pubic hair yet, numbnut?”

After a false start, the ref tossed Caldy from the faceoff and motioned me in. I won and sent the puck to Stouffy, who skated it into the Lynx’s zone. Before he could take a shot, one of the Lynx’s wingers forced a turnover, so everyone reversed course and sped to our end of the ice. The winger bounced the puck off the goalpost, and the other winger caught the rebound and passed to the center. He tried to wrist it in, but the puck bounced of Jackie’s blocker, and Caldy got possession.

Everyone hustled back to the Lynx’s zone. With their D too close for comfort, Caldy sent me the puck. I launched a shot on goal, but the Lynx’s netminder deflected it, and Caldy took the puck again. We were all out of position, with the Lynx pressuring us hard. One of Montreal’s D-men wouldn’t budge from Caldy’s side, and since I was closer to the goal than he was, Caldy passed to me again. I didn’t even have the energy to yell “fuck” when the Lynx’s left wing intercepted, and everyone raced back to our zone.
