CHAPTER 13

Ice stood by the beach and watched the waves roll toward the island. He felt her presence before he heard anything. “The island is secure, and you should be sleeping.”

“I figured you’d do a deep dive today. I couldn’t while it was dark. So, I’ll join the rest of you on your schedule. I found an empty armory.” Ronnie stood beside him. She wore her thigh holster, and he was strapped with enough sharp objects to slice his way out of hell.

“I moved everything.”

“Con told me.”

“I haven’t taken the weapons out of the tree yet.” Ice shrugged. “Best if they remain close.”

“I agree.” Ronnie sat down on a rocky outcropping. “Con said Guardian was going to get them help. The soonest they can pull a supercomputer away from what it’s doing is next week.”

“In the meantime?”

“In the meantime, we wait. I talked with the little sister before I came out to find you. The girl has had it rough.”

“She has. Both of them have.” Londyn wasn’t pregnant, and she hadn’t been violated sexually, but she’d been abused every damn day she was on the island, too. Ice pointed toward the water. “Shark.”

Ronnie shielded her eyes and stared in the direction he pointed. “More than one,” she noted as another fin appeared near the first. “Hopefully, all the evidence from this place is consumed.”

“Do you care if it is or not?” Ice didn’t, not even for a nanosecond.

Ronnie dropped both arms back to the rock behind her and leaned back, exposing her face to the sun. “Meh, it’s easier on the organization when bodies don’t wash up on shore. Sooner or later, they’re identified, and then they show up here. Makes our life harder.”

“There is that,” Ice conceded.

“Londyn was looking out the front door. I asked her if she wanted to come with me. Did you know she’s never been out of that house, except for the massive garden in the middle?”

Ice glanced over at Ronnie. “I assumed. I didn’t know for sure.”

“Hmmm.” Ronnie turned her face back toward the sun and closed her eyes. “They’re coming to get me sooner rather than later. Archangel said he’d be delivering some help for you.”

“Any indication as to why the women aren’t going with you? And why are you talking to Archangel?”

“He’s one of my points of contact when I’m on a mission like Fury or Anubis. Londyn and Paris will stay until you go off the island. Dr. Wheeler spoke with both women today while you were scouring this rock. Londyn was quite direct. She won’t leave without you. Which is going to put you in a sticky situation.”

Ice turned to look at Ronnie. “How so?”

“She’s looking at you as her savior. You know, halo and all that shit.”

“She knows what I am. She witnessed me taking out my target. I’ve told her about my … limitations.” Ice turned again to watch the blue waves turn green as they rolled closer to the island, finally splashing on the rocky beach like a white foam.
