Chapter 15: Our Best Scavenging Score

Several months had passed since Dave and I had gone into Laramie to ‘shop’ that day. We’d installed the police radios in the vehicles and after some trials and misgivings had finally raised the base station’s antenna. We were running low on some items and had decided to make a run into Fort Collins, Colorado, for several reasons. First, to see if they had faired as badly as Cheyenne and Laramie, secondly to see if there were living people there, friendly living people that is, and finally, to take a look at the stores from a scavenging standpoint.

Ruth and I had been there scavenging for a three day stint when we decided to head home on Interstate 25, north. Our questions having been answered, as we didn’t see any live people and there were Zs moving about freely. Julia and Dave had headed for Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to make a five-day scavenging run there and see if they could hook up with Dave’s old boss, the Sheriff. Ruth and I had stopped by a farm store and two supermarkets, and since her truck was full, she headed home before me. I was getting the last of some case goods loaded when she left and wouldn’t be but a moment or two behind her.

I headed out shortly afterwards and having turned north on I-25, I saw a sign that said Army National Guard Next Right…why not! It would be worth the look, so I took the right and followed it to the National Guard base. When I turned into the driveway, a gate barred my progress so I stopped, turned the engine off and ensured my AR was charged. I sat there for five minutes or so just watching, and seeing no movement whatsoever, I climbed out of the truck and walked up to the gate. It was locked, and concertina wire wound all along the top of the fence so climbing was out. I wondered if anyone was in there, so I yelled top voice, “Hello!”

Yep, here they came. Several Z’s came shuffling out from around the several buildings I could see. I could see a few connex containers behind them in the distance. I put my suppressor on my .223 and waited until they approached the fence and popped them each in the head then shot the lock off the gate. Replacing the used magazine with a fresh one, I placed the partially used mag back in my vest. Not seeing any more Z’s or living people either, I pushed the gate open and just waited for a few more moments before getting back into the truck and driving in.

After pulling past the fence, I stopped, got out, went back and closed the gate, placing the chain such that it looked locked. Getting back into my GMC, I drove around the complex watching for Z’s or anyone else.

The complex was made up of several buildings, all one story, and in the back of the place was a double row of connex containers, which I noted were locked.
