Chapter Thirteen
Finally, it is opening night of My Wonderful Obsession. I am doing my stretches on a portable ballet bar set up backstage, dressed in my costume for the first scene. My nerves are high, but I push them down the best I can. I canât let them get the best of me. Just dance. That is all I must do. Just dance, I repeat to myself.
The production starts out with our chance meeting where we flirt, tease, and let the audience experience our romantic relationship blossoming. I let my mind replay the scenes, keeping the emotions in check. Iâm feeling a little anxious, knowing that the creep is out in the audience. I know it is a lost cause, but I really hope Jace is out there too. I feel so safe when Iâm with him. I let my mind be at ease with the thought that Iâm surrounded by people backstage. Surely, this guy will not try something with so many people around, but I still catch myself glancing around, suspicious.
I see Dallas across the way, stretching and listening to music on his phone. His eyes are closed, completely absorbed in his own thoughts. I try to get myself to concentrate like him. I can do this. I am an excellent dancer. I start my stretching over, just to relax. I bend over, touching my toes, when I feel a presence behind me. I jump a little when I feel a hand on my back.
âJace! Iâm sorry, you startled me. I didnât think you could come.â I try to contain the excitement in my voice. I relax my stretching pose but continue to stretch. He watches me with those golden eyes. I donât know what has come over me tonight, but I check him out boldly. He is dressed to perfection with black slacks, a light blue button up shirt that is unbuttoned enough for me to see the medallion shining in the lights. The color is perfect for enhancing that golden tan. His hair is starting to wave slightly from not being cut in a while. He has his black suit jacket slung over his shoulder. I tear my eyes from ogling him. I continue with my stretching routine, but I canât seem to stop looking at him, so I see his gaze watch as I bend and lift my leg up on pointe. His eyes follow my movements. He is such a leg man.
âChange of plans. I told you I would be here if possible. After everything, I think it is necessary.â He says so seriously. Suddenly, I feel like a pathetic damsel in distress. I guess he just feels obligated to be my bodyguard tonight. Oh well, at least he is here. I pull my leg up high with my ankle close to my head. I watch as he glances away with a choked sound. Am I making him uncomfortable?
âIâm just going to be over here.â He points to the opening at the side of the stage.
