After putting all the gems Tim had brought onto the modification crystal and receiving a huge quest bonus of both chaos and order points, Jerry finally looked at the notification tab that had been blinking in the side of his RPG vision for the majority of the day. There was a flood of notifications about experience gained, chaos points gained, progression paths unlocked, and even an achievement called ‘mind of the mage’.

“What is this mind of the mage?” Jerry asked the crystal as Tim and a few of his top people looked on in fascination. Jerry had followed the crystal’s instructions and made his screens visible to normal sight at the expense of a modicum of the chaos and entropic power the tower was channeling through him.

“It means that you discovered a complete spell on your own, without the assistance of a previous tower lord, myself, or any other external power or mind. It means you are one step closer to understanding the nature of the universe and magic itself. But in practical terms it makes it easier for you to develop spells and magical applications on your own.”

“So I assume that was when I pushed all that power into those two guys’ heads?” Jerry asked.

“Yes,” the crystal agreed. “Normally that spell would have been called ‘infusion’ and believe it or not it was never intended for combat.”

“Then what is it for?” Jerry asked in confusion. “Because I have to say, it is really handy in a fight.”

Tim snorted. “I get it, handy because you killed ‘em with your hand.”

Jerry rolled his eyes. “So what was it for?” He pressed.

“Well,” the crystal began, creating a set of misty figures to appear above it in blue light, acting out the crystal’s explanation. “When new mages first begin learning under a tower lord, they may have the spark that allows them to perceive magic but their abilities are very small. They need to ‘work out’ so to speak. So a tower lord can push magic into them, widening their capacity. It isn’t all together pleasant.” It said as the younger figure began to scream as the other poured magic into it. “But it is effective and can turn weak magi into capable bearers of power.”

“So wait” Tim broke in. “If tower lords get their power from these things,” he said waving his hand at the column of energy. “And priests get their power from demons, or gods, or whatever the things they worship actually are, then where do those new trainee magi get their power, and where do they keep getting it after they’ve been trained by a tower lord?”

“Ah, that is an astute question. One you should have come up with Jerry,” the crystal scolded.

“You see magic as you define it, is caused by the interaction of order, chaos, entropy, and creativity or mind. As you can imagine order and chaos is around you all the time and entropy is so constant that at times it can be indistinguishable from time itself.
