Chapter 10

I could hear Heath talking to the kids: “Jonah, put down that knife! Chloe, can you take the headphones off? Chloe?”

I snuggled under the soft throw, cuddled up on the couch in front of the fire that Heath had built. The three of them were making dinner. Chloe had told me to go lie down, because I was limping a lot. “That was a nasty fall. It looked really awful,” she said. “A man skied by next to me and was like, that lady wiped out so bad.”

“Thanks so much,” I told her. “I will take a glass of water, now that you mention it. And a snack.” I patted her cheek and we both laughed.

This was the life. For all those years, Annora had made me go look at Graham’s house, where Heath and Lara had also lived. Staring up at the mansion from the sidewalk, I hadn’t truly understood what it meant to live in the comfort that was inside. I curled and uncurled my toes, luxuriating. Maybe I would close my eyes for a bit. From the sound of things, it seemed like dinner was going to take a while.

There was another sound. I sat up and dug around for my phone in the purse I had tossed next to the couch. I checked the screen—Marcos! It was Marcos.

I tried not to seem too eager when I answered. “Hey.”

“Hey, babe. It’s been a while.”

“Yeah, I guess it has. The last time I saw you was that night in Cow Hollow,” I said. I tried to sound casual. “You were coming out of a store, I think.” A baby store. With his pregnant wife. I waited.

“Sure, I remember,” he said easily. “Where are you? Want to get together?”

“I’m in Tahoe.”

“Really? What are you doing up there, gambling?”

“No, I’m with the family I told you about. Where I’m the nanny.” I wasn’t just the nanny, like I had said, though. I wanted to explain. “I never told you about my sister—”

“That dad tried to get into your pants yet?” Marcos laughed. “Did you let him?”

I sat up straight on the couch. “No, of course not! He wouldn’t try anything with me, it’s not like that between us at all. And I wouldn’t cheat on you!” I heard the words and for the first time felt their meaning. It hadn’t ever occurred to me to see someone else. I hadn’t ever stepped out, on any of my boyfriends.

“Good,” he said. “You’re all mine. I like it like that.”

Even though I was mad at him, it was nice to hear him say that. “Yeah. I’m yours,” I told him.

“When do you get back? I want to know how much longer I’m going to have to wait.”

“I get back on Sunday. But we need to talk…”

“Sure, we’ll talk. How about we go to a better place this time?” He named one of the best hotels in San Francisco.

“Really? You want to go to the Cypresswood?” I asked, a little incredulous.

“Only the best for you.
