Chapter 20

Run for It

1.

His running was at once as fast as he could manage and yet impossibly slow. An icy claw of panic wrapped around his heart and squeezed. His vision, though obscured by the dark, was hyper-focused on his path of retreat. If he didn’t get away soon, he knew he’d be dead.

Allen pushed through the ceaseless trees of the woods with everything he had. He tossed quick glances over his shoulder every now and again to catch glimpses of the dark and hungry thing following him. All he was able to see was a big, dark shape and two penetrating glowing red eyes. But that was more than enough to motivate him.

It felt like he was running knee-deep through an expansive vat of maple syrup. His legs couldn’t be coaxed to propel him forward any faster no matter how hard he tried. If anything, he seemed to be losing speed. But that couldn’t be right. He was trying all the harder to get away, knowing that the thing was on his heels and could have him at any second.

He didn’t feel tired, just slow.

Another glance over his shoulder told him the thing had not gained on him. But neither had it given up pursuit. It was still on him

He returned his focus to the way ahead. There wasn’t exactly a clear path. There never was in the woods, especially not at night. What was worse, nothing looked different enough for him to get his bearings. He didn’t even know for sure that he was headed in the right direction. He might have been heading deeper into the woods for all he knew.

A snarling sound behind him injected an extra burst of panic into his blood. This did not greatly improve his speed, however. Now despair arose within him and a note of hopelessness rang out sharp and clear in his heart.

He thought, This isn’t going to end well. Just like it didn’t for…

Brad. There he was, standing to the side of the path ahead. His mangled visage stared blankly at Allen with his remaining eye. Part of Allen cried out within him to swerve, to avoid the ghostly apparition at all costs. But another part – a more insistent part – demanded he keep to his course and that he had nothing to fear from this phantom of his friend.

He did not deviate. Brad grew larger in his vision and his heart raced all the more on account of this. Now he found he could not tear his eyes away from the ghostly boy even if he wanted to. The sounds of the beast on his rear demanded attention but he could not give it.

Then Allen noticed the oddest thing. No matter how hard he ran, Brad no longer seemed to be any closer. It was like he stood at a locked distance from Allen. He too was now moving in the same direction, though he faced Allen and his legs did not move.

Brad lifted an arm and pointed off to one side.
