Chapter Seven

I folded up the towel and hung it over the handle on

the oven. “You’ve said that before but I still don’t know

what that means. I’m not unique or special. I’m just me.”

Erik shook his head. “There’s nothing just about you.

Even if you never exhibited any sort of powers, you

would still be a rare creature in all the worlds.”

“See, andláts and valkyrja can usually have sex all

they want without having to worry about children. So

imagine everyone’s surprise when Hildr announced

she’s pregnant and Dexter’s the father. You could have

knocked everyone down with a bloody feather.” Panker

shuffled his feet and grinned. “Gods, I would have

loved to see the look on Dexter’s face when he got that

particular call.”

“You’re a cruel man, Panker.” Mary Alice shook her

head. “I have to go back to the computers. Kyle, you and

I will talk later.”

“Is that a threat or a promise?” I winked at her and

she laughed.

“Both.”

“Okay. Catch ya later.”

She left with a wave to the others. I stood, staring at

the empty doorway, thinking about how I didn’t want to

go back to the training room. Maybe it was time to cut

and run, or at least, cut and walk around the grounds.

The oppression grew until it was all I could do to stand

up straight.

“Don’t get her hopes up if you’re not interested,” Erik

murmured as he walked by.

I blinked. “What are you talking about?”

“You flirting with Mary Alice. Don’t do it if you’re not

interested.”

“She’s not my type,” I spoke under my breath.

“Why not? She’s pretty.” Erik turned to stand in front

of me, barely out of my personal space.

Panker didn’t pay us any attention. He continued

out of the kitchen and turned towards the stairway. I

assumed he was heading to the weight room.

“Mary Alice is pretty, but I’m not interested in what

any girl has to offer.”

My heart pounded in my chest, and I found it hard

to breathe. Admitting to myself that I was gay was one

thing. Talking about it to anyone else was an entirely

different matter.

“Really?” Erik’s gaze took on a speculative expression.

I inclined my head a few inches, still not entirely

willing to commit to the telling.

“That’s interesting,” was all he said before he left me.

Instead of turning left in the hallway, I went right in

the direction of the door leading outside. I was running

by the time I hit the door.

“Kyle!”

I heard Erik call behind me, but I wasn’t interested in

stopping. Every nerve and instinct in my body screamed

that I needed to get out of that building at that exact

moment.

Bursting through the barrier to the outside, I stumbled

a few feet from the entryway and bent over, bracing my

hands on my knees as I panted. Erik skidded to a stop

next to me, reaching out to touch me, but letting his hand

fall away without granting me one of my three wishes.

That particular wish was to feel the guy touch me and I

seemed bound to be disappointed.

“What the hell happened in there?”

I flopped to the ground, lying back to stare up at the

patches of blue sky in the background behind the tree

branches.
