It was three in the morning. The dark Mercedes van rolled slowly up the deserted cobbled lane, pulled over to the curb, and the lights and motor cut in unison. The driver, the oldest of the three inside, reminded the other two of the plan. It would be simple. In and out in no time. They all checked their watches. It was time to go. The two men, in dark clothes and cradling silenced Heckler & Koch submachine guns, got out quietly and left the side door ajar. They sneaked along the heavy metal fence, covered with a thick layer of ivy, that surrounded the expansive von Herz estate. They stopped at a locked gate. The taller man unlocked it, started to open it slowly, but it creaked so he stopped. Then he gave it a quick, quiet swing. They went in and closed it the same way.
They stepped off the sidewalk into the grassy shadows and crept toward the large mansion. It was larger than either of them had expected; white stucco with oak shutters decorating each window, oak balcony rails, and a thick slate roof. The grounds were shaded from the moon and streetlights by tall pines and oaks.
The tall man stopped quickly and placed his hand against the otherâs chest. Then he guided him to the left, behind a tree trunk and away from the motion-sensitive light.
When they reached the shrubs along the corner of the house, they paused for a moment and checked the time. Right on schedule.
The smaller man moved along the edge of the house to a corner window. A Roladen covered the glass, but there were cracks between the slats allowing air to flow through the top that was propped open. The small man pulled out a pliers wrapped with rubber tape, bent the shade out of its track on each side, and pulled the shade open enough to crawl through. Then the tall man snapped the side latch, clamped the top of the window and drew it inward until it was flush with the frame, and then swung the window in slowly. They were in. Each took turns climbing between the Roladen and the lower window frame without a noise.
Once inside, the tall man scanned the room with his red light. It was the library, just as he thought. He made his way to a sliding wooden door, opened it slowly, and then moved around the corner. To the right was a long marble stairway, light shining through a high upper window illuminating the very top. He turned off his light, and they made their way upward along the wooden banister, skirting the edge of the wall. When they reached the top, the tall man slipped across the hall through the moonlight, opened the first door, and slid inside. The smaller man followed him. They left the room door open and crouched in a corner. The tall man checked his watch again. Perfect. They waited.
