The actual Spitfire which disintegrated in this story.

‘My straps were done up but fortunately they broke. There must have been a hell of a lot of G for the hood was shut and I went straight through as though on a modern ejection seat. I was lucky all this happened over Essex and not over the sea for I was knocked out and not in very good shape. I'd started at about twenty-nine thousand feet and I must have fallen a long way before I came round. When I did and realised I was no longer in the cockpit, I pulled my parachute ripcord and as the canopy deployed I came out of cloud and there was the ground – six hundred feet below! I landed in a ploughed field more or less in one piece.

‘The final sequel no doubt amused many but it took a little time for me to see the funny side. In those days we flew just in our blue uniforms and Mae Wests as it was more comfortable on long trips in a small cockpit which, happily, was well heated. As I came through the cockpit hood I lost the sleeves and most of my tunic and also, alas, my trousers, so there I was coming down very improperly dressed. I felt, indeed I was, very naked, particularly as almost before I hit the ground people seemed to be converging on the scene. I wrapped myself in my parachute, sat still, and refused to move until a truck came to take me away! What I liked least of all was hearing people say: “Is he one of ours or one of theirs?”’
