Sonya’s office was grander than I had imagined. There was an intricately carved wooden desk, a chair, a wall of bookshelves, and a series of computers. There was a sense of power and elegance in the room. Above the fireplace was a peculiar painting of a woman’s silhouette standing over a mountain of dead bodies. It was creepy, and I wondered if it was Sonya depicted in the portrait.

“So this is home for you,” I said, running my fingers across the back of the couch. “Comfy.”

“Have a seat, Tasia.” Sonya’s voice was resolute.

“I think I’d like to stand.”

“Very well.” She leaned against the desk. “I advised you that I would keep you up to date if we had any progress identifying the individuals behind your assault.”

She had my attention. All the qualms I had about Sonya evaporated. No matter whether I liked her or she liked me—this was serious.

“Do you know who is after us?”

“Yes. I had a suspicion when you first got here, as this group had been watched by one of our sister covens for some time now, and they confirmed it with me today. The group is called the Deity, or by some, Deity X,” she said.

I recalled the humans in the alley and at the toy store. They’d all had a small X tattooed on their necks.

“It is a group of humans dedicated to cleansing the Earth of supernatural beings. The Deity regard the vampire species as their biggest risk, and they believe they could eradicate us if they had the blood of a dhampyr. What they don’t realize is that it’s not just any dhampyr blood. I believe they need one with the purest blood of an original vampire.”

“Why? What makes our blood so different?”

“Tasia, do you know how your father came to be?”

“Why would you think I’d know anything about my father? He died when I was six, and my aunt didn’t know much about his past either. She was my mother’s sister and didn’t even know he was a vampire until after we were born.”

Sonya was fidgeting, something I had never seen her do. “I’m going to tell you about your father’s origins.”

“You know? And you’ve been keeping this from me. Why?”

“Tasia, now is not the time—unless you prefer not to hear what I have to say.”

“Fine.” I crossed my arms.

“Yes, I’ve been around a long time, Tasia, and I remember the story of the Vasiles. There are different versions told throughout history, but what I’m going to tell you is what I know to be closest to the truth.”

“I need to sit down.” I gripped the edge of the couch and slid into the seat. Sonya strolled over and sat down next to me on the couch.

“At the beginning of the second century, the Roman Empire conquered Dacia, which was where your father was born. Your grandfather, Cristian Vasile, was a widower. He fell in love with a Roman girl, Valentina, after the war. Unfortunately, her family disapproved of their relationship. They
