Montak was standing beside the front door, pressed against the wall, his Bowie knife in his massive fist. The footsteps rang on the wooden porch outside. Bootheels falling in measured paces. He stepped back, crouching as the door swung open. The moonlight silvered the blade of his knife. Ray had turned, his pistol trained on the open doorway.

“Kid,” he said with a sigh.

“Step in quickly,” Sally said. “There’s men out there with guns!”

“I guess they’re gone,” Soledad said. Sally searched the shadowed eyes of the tall, wide-shouldered man who stood, feet spread wide, in the doorway.

“Gone?” she said as if the idea were impossible to accept.

Inkada had slipped in from the kitchen. “You sent them packing?”

“I suggested they leave,” Soledad said. Sally lit a lamp, the yellow flare of the lantern lighting the tall man’s face, forming shadows in his hollow cheeks.

“Did they tag you?” Ray wanted to know. He holstered his gun and took a worried step forward.

“No. I was very lucky,” Soledad said.

“They’re gone.” Sally sighed again, touched her yellow hair, and sagged into a flowered chair. “I can’t believe it—it’s over.”

The Kid said nothing. Over? Hardly over. Whatever those men wanted, they wanted it badly enough to die for. They would be back. And when they returned they would be armed with many guns and their hatred. That was the way of such men. They understood only the logic of the Colt.
