The next morning, I woke to a tray being slid into the cell. My eyes lit up to see a glass of water. It didn’t cure my dry throat, but it helped.

“Thirsty?” Mr. Kin asked.

I nodded. “I got lost… three nights ago. I haven’t really had much water since then.”

He offered his cup.

I shook my head. “You probably need it more than I do.”

He smiled before drinking it.

I poked the brown thing on the tray. It felt dry to the touch, and the outer layer was firmer than the inside. It reminded me of bread, but I wasn’t sure. “What’s this?”

He looked at me, confused. “Bread. Have you never had bread before?”

“...Not like this,” I mumbled, tearing a piece off and eating it. It tasted better than I expected of something being fed to me by people who had taken me hostage.

He slowly nodded before beginning to eat.

“Will they feed us again?”

He shrugged. “Some days, they don’t. It’s rare they’ll feed us twice.”

I looked at him before focusing on his thin body. “But…”

He sighed. “I know. But I’m not here for my enjoyment. They may be nicer to you.”

“I hope so,” I mumbled. My eyes kept darting back to his wounds then at my lap. “They’re really mean to you.”

Mr. Kin nodded. “I don’t expect them to be anything else. So is there anything you can tell me about yourself?”

I blinked a few times. “I-I think I’m a Christian?”

He smiled a little. “I am, too, but you think you are?”

I shrugged. “My parents are… so I guess I am.”

“I think it’s a choice you make for yourself.”

“Oh… then I don’t know.”

“Well, just keep praying.”

I frowned. “Look how far that got you. You’ve probably prayed to get out, yet you’re still here. You’re being ignored.”

He shook his head. “Or He said no.”

“If He loves us, why would He say no?”

Mr. Kin sighed. “That’s something I may never know until I get to heaven.”

“It doesn’t seem fair.”

“Life isn’t fair. We told God we wanted to do things our way when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden. And this is how some people use it.”

“God’s intervened before; why can’t He do it again?”

He scooted back until he was leaning against the wall. He let out a long sigh. “I can’t answer that. I just do my best to trust Him and find comfort that no matter what they do to me, one day I’ll see my Savior.”

I looked at my feet. “You don’t make sense.”

He laughed a little before groaning. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s not easy, but I’ll take what comfort I can get.”
