I threw the vampire against a tree then followed with a foot against his throat, my toe claws burying into flesh.

He laughed, and sounded surprisingly sane. I ripped open his shirt and saw the skin pulled back together over what had been a hole in his chest.

“Yes, you took my heart, but I have a replacement.”

“You don’t mind if I look at it, do you?”

“I could tell you who did it.”

“I’d rather see. Not that I don’t trust you, but you did come to my valley.”

Someone cleared his throat behind me. I glanced back to see Vincent studying my victim with an intense look of confusion. “Vincent, welcome to the party. You have something to say.”

“The dead clan is the most civilized vampire group in the Americas. They never kill humans.”

I stared at him then sighed. “You couldn’t have mentioned this before?” I scowled at the dead clan member. “What brings you to my valley? Why threaten my humans if you aren’t going to kill them?”

“It’s obvious, isn’t it?” Vincent murmured.

There was nothing more obnoxious than when someone said that something was obvious when it wasn’t obvious to you. I glared at him. “Feel free to make it obvious to everyone else.”

He blinked and then bowed. “I mean no disrespect.” Except that he kind of did. I just usually wasn’t on edge enough to kill him for it. This day hadn’t gone well. “Clearly someone is threatening him and he’s here for your help. Hostages will bring you where you can be talked to reasonably.”

That made no sense. Why would I help someone who had hostages instead of killing them?

The dead vampire snorted. “That’s far too obvious for the Queen of the Underworld.”

I shivered and turned to truly study him. “You can tell me about it? Usually Sacra puts a binding on her associates that makes confession impossible.”

“I can tell you all about it. Either you give up your humanity or your friends become the darkness. There must be balance. You are falling too far over into their camp.”

“You were going to turn all of them?” I glared at Vincent. “How is that not killing?” I frowned back at the newcomer who had something in his chest that wasn’t a heart, something the Queen’s high priestess had probably put there. That made the new vampire terrifying. He could explode or become something of dark depravity that would eat away at everything I loved. “Do you have a name?”

“Daniel.”

“Daniel, you seem a decent enough vampire. What did you do to become worthy of corruption?”

He hesitated. “I do not wish to say.”

“Ah, properly ashamed of your righteous ways. I’m sure you’ll get points for that. If you turn humans in my valley, that has the same consequences as killing them. You will die. All of your clan will die. I’ll enjoy it.”

He convulsed and then lunged past me. I whirled around and watched him grab Felicity, pulling her against him before sinking his fangs into her throat. She stared at me with large shocked eyes before she started struggling.
