Of course, employers have all these same problems from the other side. They don’t know what candidates actually know and can do, so they look for people who “fit the profile” of people who have performed adequately in the past, even if that means they keep looking at people from the same institutions and keep hiring people who look the same, often literally, as the ones they’ve hired before. The result, as shown clearly in the data, is employers can’t find enough people with the knowledge and skills they need, and people who could do the job—or learn how to do it if given the chance—don’t get the opportunity they so desperately seek.
