But I don’t get to finish my part, because Beatrice does it for me.

“It looks like me, I know. Every stupid month there’s a picture of me in that magazine. Me with kittens! Me with a bunch of balloons! Me wearing clown makeup and holding a—a—sock puppet.” She glances at Jelly Baby and her cheeks go a fighting kind of red.

“Wow, are you like the official Little Trixie model?” Noah asks. “That’s cool.”

Beatrice gives him a hard look. “Only because my dad makes me. He says if I want to do plays here, then I have to do something for the family business.”

The family business? Beatrice’s family owns Little Trixie magazine? I can see this has made an impression on Folly, too, because he starts messing with his tie, tapping his fingers on his laptop, anything he can do to make it look like he’s paying zero attention to Beatrice and this new little piece of information.

“You’re Little Trixie?” I say, and Beatrice glares at me.

This is as good a place as any for the intermission, even if we’re only partway through the second act. You can’t tell me I don’t know when enough is enough.
