When counting, a musician is actually counting the beats. But what is a beat?

In music theory, a beat is the basic unit of time, as a pulse. Beat is directly connected to the rhythm as this is formed by a sequence of stressed and unstressed beats.

The counting of beats in a song depends on its time signature. To learn to count here, we will use the 4/4-time signature which is the most common in music.

In the 4/4-time signature, we will consider that each measure will have four beats. So, if we also take into consideration that each measure can have four quarter notes, it is pretty obvious that each quarter note will last one beat.
