2011 Abacela Albarino, Umpqua Valley, Oregon: A grape famed in northwestern Spain, done stateside with great flair; crisp, zesty, full of aromas and tastes of pear and yellow apple; deliciously fresh. $19

2009 Hedges Family Estate CMS Red, Columbia Valley, Washington: “CMS” stands for this moderately tannic, low alcohol (13.5 percent — for a modern red!), elegant, aroma-laden, juicy, smooth mix of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah; fantastic price. $12
