Another solution, demonstrated here on my ’98 Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster, is to install the Buzz Stop, a device invented by Mark Sampson and available from the John Sprung’s American Guitar Center. The Buzz Stop attaches simply, with the front two mounting screws of the Jazzmaster’s tremolo plate.

A unique feature of the Jazzmaster is a sliding lockout lever that immobilizes the tremolo. If you break a string, you depress the lever until the lockout slides home—you’ll be in tune until you can replace the string. Or, you can keep the tremolo locked if you don’t want it to move accidentally.
