SANTI

I TURNED the handle on the door slowly, thankful when it didn't make any noise. It was barely light outside, but enough that I didn't need to turn any lights on to go down the stairs.

The door to Micah's practice was open, as was the door to the recovery room where he'd placed Olive.

It didn't take me long to find out why when I saw Alfie peacefully asleep curled up next to Olive, who was awake and noticed me as soon as I walked in.

"Hey, Duchess," I said softly. "I hope your friend doesn't get in trouble with the sexy doctor."

She did one of her speech growls and licked my hand.

"It's a big day today. You be a good girl, and we'll be home soon, okay?"

She raised her head the way she always did when she didn't want me to stop scratching behind her ears. There was nothing I'd refuse her right now.

"I'm going to promise you this, Duchess. Live through this. Come home, and I'll let you have all the pets you want."

She let out a little bark.

"That’s a dangerous promise to make. Most people would promise more treats or toys."

I turned around to see Micah leaning against the doorframe, wearing a ripped pair of jeans and a T-shirt with faded letters that I could just about make out saying, Dogtor Sawyer.

"She's a special girl," I said.

"That she is."

He came into the room and checked Olive while kicking Alfie out.

They both growled at him, which made me smile, but after licking Olive's face, Alfie left.

"Do you want coffee? Breakfast?" Micah asked.

He looked relaxed like this was just another day for him.

Part of me was annoyed because this wasn't just another day. My life could change again in just a few hours, so it wasn't just another day.

But at the same time, I was glad that he wasn't overthinking what had happened last night. Or at least it didn't appear that he was.

I was doing enough of that for both of us.

Last night wasn't exactly a mistake. There was no denying we'd both wanted it to happen.

But Micah was inexperienced, and he deserved someone who could be there for him. I couldn't let him fall for me or expect more than I could give.

Micah deserved a man who'd take his arm for a walk by the river and talk about smart things. Not a veteran who'd take his arm because he couldn't see where he was going and didn't know how to have an intelligent conversation.

I knew how to flirt, to talk my way into and out of any situation, and to kill. I didn't even have a career anymore.

No, Micah would find his perfect partner.

All I could think was, thank god I wouldn't see it happen. Literally.

"Santi?"

"I'm sorry about yesterday," I blurted out.

Micah froze in place, but his face didn't change.

"What are you sorry for?"

"I took something from you."

Micah raised his hand. His brows were drawn together in anger.

"First of all, I'm not some old maiden who will be forever cast aside for being with a man before marriage.
