Chapter Three: Beginner’s Method For Solving The Rubik’s Cube

Before delving into the different methods for solving the Rubik's Cube, you must first understand how this 3D combination puzzle works. The classic Rubik's Cube, which is still the most widely popular variation today, has six faces with nine stickers on each side. Each side has one solid color, namely, red, blue, white, green, orange, and yellow. Early Rubik's Cubes had varying positions of the colored sides, but in models produced today, white is opposite the yellow side, while blue is opposite green, red and orange are opposite each other, and then the red, white, and blue colors are arranged clockwise.

The Rubik's Cube has an internal pivot feature which allows each face of the cube to turn independently from the rest. To solve the puzzle, you must find a way to return the cube to its original appearance, which is one solid color for each face. There are now variations of cubes and puzzles with more sides, dimensions, stickers, and images, but the classic Rubik's Cube (3X3X3), with eight corners and twelve edges, remains the most used.

In the original cube, there are 40,320 different ways to arrange the corner cubes, with each corner having three orientations, but only seven out of the eight with independent orientation. Early advertising for the Rubik's Cube depicted it as containing up to three billion different combinations, but only one correct and unique solution for the puzzle.
