CHAPTER FOURTEEN—Nicholas

It was good to see Cami away from the Keane residence for once; as Nicholas led his mate toward his suite in the Overton home, he thought about how bizarre their lives would look to someone on the outside—even to other wealthy people. He hadn’t spent more than a night in his own family home in weeks, and once things were more settled with Cami, and the kids were a little older, she would likely spend as much time at other houses as she did in the Keane residence. But that depended on a lot of factors.

“So, he wants to join team Cami?” Nicholas asked his mate, as she stepped into his room. He closed the door behind them, watching as Cami threw herself with elegant nonchalance onto the big couch near the window, looking up at him with amusement in her eyes and a wry smile on her lips.

“That’s what he’d have me believe, anyway,” Cami said.

Nicholas sat on the edge of his bed, watching his mate with appreciation. There was a small part of him that hoped that they’d be able to discuss the topic at hand with enough time left over afterwards to enjoy the solitude.

“And his proposal is that you do the deed to his sister?” Nicholas asked.

Cami nodded. “Apparently she’s every bit the black sheep the rumors led us to expect,” Cami said. “Alternately, there’s the possibility he’s setting me up, but he threatened to go to Miranda for help, if I didn’t agree to his proposition.”

“But he doesn’t want to be one of your mates,” Nicholas said.

“He pointed out—rightly enough—that I have four mates already; it’s hardly illustrious for anyone who comes next in line,” Cami said. “But I do think he expects a certain amount of physicality to take place.”

“He wants a piece of ass and an alliance with a woman who can shut his sister down,” Nicholas mused. “I mean … I can’t blame him.”

“No one can blame him; it’s just a question of if I want to go through with it, given everything else,” Cami said.

“The biggest thing—after deciding if you want to take his offer—is to make sure that Miranda doesn’t either,” Nicholas pointed out.

Cami tilted her head back against the arm of the couch, looking up at the ceiling with an expression on her face that Nicholas knew meant that she was looking at the issue from more than one angle, that she was tilting it this way and that in her mind, trying to see the various possible outcomes.

“I think they’re running a game on us,” Cami said.

Nicholas raised an eyebrow. “Go on,” he prompted.

“I mean, really digging into it, I think they’re running separate games on us,” Cami said. “Nima has been getting pretty cozy with Jordan and Jamie both; Jordan let me know that she’d sort of propositioned him.”

“So is he on board to play distraction?” Nicholas asked.

Cami shook her head. “No, he wants to see where it goes, but he’s not in the distraction game anymore, and I’m not going to push him to be,” Cami said.
