Chapter 4

All the warnings and admonitions about how hard she was going to be working during the week off the trade show proved to be inadequate. She had always scoffed at the women that scurried about wearing running shoes with their business suits. By mid-afternoon on the first day her ‘sensible’ three-inch pumps were crushing her feet like a steamroller, and she was desperately scanning her schedule for a half hour to escape and by a pair of sneakers before she was no longer able to walk.

By Thursday morning she had other reasons for difficulty walking. Alan Gregson was indeed the Big Bad Wolf in bed, or some other kind of wild beast that fucked hard and often. After twelve hours a day of meetings, followed by research, followed by mixers, followed by meeting with those contacts made at mixers she was more than ready for bed by the time they returned to their suite. Alan was more than ready for bed as well but his use for the bed had nothing to do with sleeping the way Bethany’s did. She was swollen and sore but ready for more… just as long as the lube lasted.

When the curtain came down on the show, when the ink was dry on the last contract signed, and when the last networking cocktail was finished, Bethany had never felt more professionally competent, sexually fulfilled and physically exhausted in her life. As she collapsed into the overstuffed armchair in their suite and looked out over the Frankfurt skyline. She felt as though the terrified and confused Ms. Wright that had trembled in anxiety standing next to Sarah’s desk only a week ago was someone that she wouldn’t recognize today.

She poured herself a cup of herbal tea and tucked her feet beneath her as the stress melted from her body. She was exhilarated at her professional success. She had signed three of the ten authors that she had scheduled at the start of the show. Two more she had pointed in the direction of some European literary agents with encouragement to write in their native language and perhaps meet next year for translation deals, their command of English was not sufficient for them to be successful, but their plot arcs were compelling and had promise. She had discovered a diamond in the rough during a cocktail party and found more than a dozen established authors looking for new arrangements. Alan and other executives at Stork had been more than pleased with her reports and she already had a draft copy of her new contract in her email waiting for her review as soon as she felt she could give it the attention to detail it required. Hopefully by Sunday she’d feel a little less exhausted.

She’d found at least ten minutes a day to Skype with Trevor and bring him up to speed on her professional conquests. He’d also been more than happy to hear that she was enjoying the physical aspects of the trip. He seemed to be embracing her new role as hotwife enthusiastically.
