CHAPTER 10

‡

Wyatt went directly to Tangerine’s stall and moved around the space to see where the camera was visible. He collected the ladder from the storage room, made some adjustments to the camera’s position, and worked to better hide the electrical cord with tan duct tape. He returned the ladder and went in to check on Jet, the injured gelding.

After applying ice packs on and off the day of the injury, they had been administering the anti-inflammatory the vet prescribed, the horse seemed more comfortable. He checked the wrappings to make certain they weren’t too tight, gave the good-natured horse a pat or two, and moved on to the next thing, calling Keith Myers to see if they could meet in the next couple of days.

He left a message on the answering machine for him to return his call, leaving his cell phone as the call-back number.

The last hour of the day seemed to drag, and by the time he and his team had the horses stalled, fed, and watered, he was eager to leave. He swung by Tangerine’s stall one last time and rested his left arm atop the door. She eyed him with suspicion and refused the peppermint he offered her.

Because of the abuse, she might never trust anyone completely ever again. Which was a real shame. He left the candy on the top of the door and went to check the back door. She’d wandered over and was munching the candy by the time he went past to the front.

He took a few minutes in his office to shuck his boots and put on running shoes, evidence of his run-in with the stallion earlier in the day still clinging to the boots, as well as the smell.

He said goodnight to Morgan Baumman, one of the part time workers who stayed until eight and once outside, he turned his attention to the evening ahead and left the rest behind. Seeing Kinley’s golf cart was already gone, he got in his vehicle and drove around to her driveway. The paved road wound back into a stand of trees and opened up to a large, nicely manicured yard surrounding a long ranch-style house with a porch across the front. A porch swing with colorful pillows hung at one end. Three cane-bottomed rocking chairs were lined up in an equidistant pattern at the other end.

Kinley sat in one of the rocking chairs, her hat gone, but her ponytail still in place. Wyatt parked in the drive and opened the door. He moved around the back of his car to open it and retrieve the cooler.

“Are you a runner, Wyatt?” Kinley asked as he mounted the steps.

“Five miles a day before work.”

The surprise on her face made him smile. “Old habits die hard. Arrow was pissed that I relocated him today and decided to take a dump on my feet to show his displeasure.” He placed the cooler close and opened it. He took out two cold bottles of beer and handed her one.
