Chapter Seven
I shoved my bare backside against the electric stove and leaned over it. Ahh, there was just enough rope. Now if I could only reach the controls.
Jan said, âI want to die, Cherry.â
âSure you do. So do I.â
He moaned all the time I was bending over the stove, I heard him as a muted backdrop to my own fast breathing. My fingers stabbed out, touched to control knob and fell away. Damn! I stood on tiptoe and now my fingertips could just catch hold.
I fought to turn that knob for minutes. Always my grip slid off. But finally I made it. I heard the faint click and then I watched the metal coils as they changed color to a bright scarlet.
Now I had to get the rope over those hot coils. This wasnât as hard as I thought it might be, though I burned my wrists. The smell of sizzling rope was in the air and I held my breath, not so much against its stink but fearing that one or more of those buttons might smell it.
Nobody came, the house was silent as a tomb.
I cooked those ropes real good. They were on fire when I yanked them free and jerked on them. They parted. This gave me a little more freedom of movement, as I bent over the coils again and held the knot that fastened my wrists together to it.
I never knew how long it took to set that knot on fire. It was dark when it was done, and the blaze of the flaming ropes was the only light in the kitchen. It caught Janâs attention, he turned his head and stared dully at me.
âWhat are you doing?â
âWhat does it look like Iâm doing?â I snarled in reply. I didnât mean to snap at him, but that fire was hurting my wrists.
I wriggled my wrists free, hurled the rope from me. Then I bent and untied the knots around my ankles.
Jan was goggling at me in disbelief. âYouâre free! My God, you got loose.â
I ran naked to him, snatching up an unused knife from a wooden rack above a long kitchen counter. I slashed at his bonds until they fell away.
âCan you stand?â I wondered.
He laughed hysterically as I helped him up and then caught him when he would have toppled over. We hugged each other, him to keep from falling, me to help him stand.
âItâs almost as though weâre making love to each other,â he gasped.
âYeah. But that can wait. We canât.â
I was so anxious to get out of that house that I gave no thought to the fact that we were both stark naked. I hobbled across the floor, holding Jan up all the time, and put a hand on the kitchen doorknob.
To my relief, the door wasnât locked. We moved out into a covering darkness. We staggered along at first, the grass felt cool to my feet as it did to Janâs, and after a time he straightened and walked more surely.
âI think weâre going to make it,â he muttered.
