Sam was taking her time getting out of her uniform after she left the field. It didnât take long for the rest of the team to filter in, and the usual post-practice energy that normally filled the room was gone. That hollow emptiness in the locker room, coupled with the fact that she knew everyone was looking at her out of the corner of their eye, made getting changed a little difficult.
Eventually, everyone left, and she was alone in the locker room with her thoughts. She was still stewing over the fight from before, still bitter and angry about what Chrissie had said to her in the ambulance. She opened up her locker, wanting nothing more than to get into her regular clothes, head home and get drunk on that cheap wine in her fridge, but then the door swung open behind her.
âOâShea.â
Of course, Sam thought bitterly, stopping herself as she reached for her clean clothes. Of course, Chrissie would wait until everyone else has gone so that she can scream at me as much as she wants.
âWhat do you want?â Sam snapped, almost surprising herself at how cold her voice was. In the reflection of the mirror on the inside of her locker door, she caught sight of Chrissieâs face and saw her eyebrows shoot up a little, taken aback by her tone.
It didnât take long for Chrissie to snap back into her normal routine, though.
âYou need to get it together.â She barked, stepping forwards until she was in Samâs personal space. In the cramped space, Sam turned to look up at her, managing to muster up the energy to glare at her. After a 12-hour shift where she did nothing but get yelled at by her senior, she then had to get bullied by her during practice too.
So much for being a professional.
Sam was too exhausted for this. She was flecked with mud, her muscles ached â whether it was from the game or from the patients during the day, she had no idea â and she didnât have it in her to feel Chrissieâs wrath yet again.
âWhat do you mean âget it togetherâ?â She echoed, hearing her voice raise in anger, just a little bit.
Terriâs voice rang in the back of her head. Donât let her get a rise out of you.
She didnât have the energy to restrain herself right now, though. Right now, what she wanted was a nice hot shower before falling into bed, and Chrissie was the only obstacle blocking her from that.
âYouâre a better player than this; you know that, right?â
Chrissie was trying to remain composed. She was trying so damn hard to find a way back to that kind, almost maternal role that she played for so many new recruits. She was trying to soften her voice, take the edge and the emotion out of it, but fuck that was hard.
It always was when it came to Sam. She still couldnât figure out why the young recruit got under her skin so much.
