AJ, Marquez, and a few of their teammates were in the shallow outfield behind third base an hour before the game was to start. The stadium was only about a quarter full so far, but AJ loved this time when the low hum of conversation in the stands buzzed around the team as they loosened up in preparation for the game. He and Marquez had separated a little from the others to toss a ball around.

The second time AJ missed a warmup throw from Pearson, his friend stalked over and whacked him in the chest with his mitt. “What is the matter with you? If you start fielding as poorly as you hit, we are in deep trouble.”

AJ dragged his eyes away from scanning Section 108 of the stadium to give Marquez a death glare. “Thanks a lot, friend.”

“What gives?” Marquez asked with a lift of his chin.

“I left a ticket for Carolina.”

“Where is she?” The shortstop swiveled toward the stands.

AJ slapped the back of his friend’s head with his glove. “What do you think I’ve been doing? I don’t see her yet. But you don’t need to look too.”

Marquez dutifully turned around and cocked his head. “You gonna introduce me?”

“You’re both so damn eager to meet each other. I might as well set you up on a date.” He shook his head in disgust.

“Hey, I’m not trying to intrude on your territory.”

“There’s no territory. We’re friends.”

Marquez stared at him for a moment then stepped closer. Hand around AJ’s neck, he leaned in and said in a low voice, “The only reason I’m so interested in meeting the mysterious neighbor lady is because of that dopey look you get on your face when you say her name.”

AJ shoved him away. Marquez held his hands up. “I’m just saying, I got no designs on someone you clearly like a lot. Now, let’s get in a few more tosses and then we’ll casually walk closer to the stands, sign some autographs, and see if she’s here yet.”

AJ bent to pick up the ball he’d dropped. Pointing a finger at Pearson, he warned, “I swear to God if you say anything out of bounds to her...”

Marquez slapped his throwing hand over his heart. “On my honor.” At AJ’s look he revised his promise. “On your honor then.”

They finished their warmup then spent a few minutes chatting with an ex-teammate who now played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, their opponent that night. Finally they wandered closer to the stands and AJ ran his gaze over the fans as Pearson rambled on about something or other.

There. She’d just sat down and was pulling a notebook out of a cinch bag. Carolina looked up just then and spotted him too. She popped back up and waved.

“I found her,” AJ told Marquez.

“Where?” The shortstop was looking over at the sections closer to home plate so AJ tipped his head toward Section 108.

“In the green tank top and jeans.” She’d left her hair down and the shiny black strands fell past her shoulders.
