The lot outside the warehouse was empty except for one van. Harper leaned against it, a duffle bag at her feet.

“I’ve got something very interesting to tell you,” he said as he got out of the car.

“Yeah, well, save it.” She bent down and rummaged in the duffle then tossed him something. “Put this on.”

He stared at the hood. “What the hell is this?”

She tossed him a water bottle. “And I need you to drink the whole bottle.”

“And if I say no.”

“Then you get back in your car, go home, and we are finished.”

“I’ve helped you with everything I know. What have you done for me? You keep talking about your people and how they want to see me. Is that so that I’ll keep doing the leg work and keep you connected with the PD?”

“Tsk. Remi, you’re kind of full of yourself. Did you know that?”

He threw the hood back.

She held it up. “The hood is so you won’t see where I take you, and the drink is to knock out you and your dragon. Word is you tangled with a gargoyle tonight. There are people who want to hear your story.”

He put a hand behind him for his gun. His mouth twitched. It wasn’t there. Shit. It was still in the alley.

“Who?”

“My boss, for one.” She took out a piece of gum from a pack in her pocket. “Now are you going to cooperate with me or what?”

A man opened the side door of the van, and two other men stepped from the shadows.

“How do you know about what happened tonight?” His dragon sensed one other body he couldn’t see.

“Word travels fast.”

“You told me I had a choice, but I’m guessing that since you brought friends, that’s changed.”

She rocked her head side to side. “Yeah, not really.”

A small electric arc flashed. One of the men had a cattle prod and tapped the side of the van.

He opened the bottle and drank all the contents. Harper tossed back the hood, and he put it on. Two arms grabbed him and walked him to the van. They weren’t gentle about putting him in the back. Before the van pulled out of the gravel, Remi’s eyes closed. His last thought was that no one knew where he was.
