Chapter 12 - Evelyn
I was going to kill that asshole the moment he came back.
The chain clinked irritatingly as I paced back and forth. I could only get about five feet from the bed, nowhere near far enough to even reach the bedroom door into the main part of the house. At least Oliver hadnât closed and locked the bedroom door. I guess he hadnât thought it was necessary, but it made me feel less trapped than if he had.
I couldnât believe him. How could he do this to me, especially after what had happened with Bron? But apparently, he had decided it was worth it. The thought that he would do something like this hurt more than I could ever articulate. It also made me more furious than I had ever been before in my life.
I tugged at the chain experimentally. I knew without having to try that shifting wasnât going to do anything. Just like the handcuffs, the chain was designed to alter its shape if I shifted. I knew how to pick the locks, but I doubted Iâd be able to do it or even break it without the right equipment, none of which was in easy reach thanks to the stupid chain around my ankle.
Bending down, I tapped at the bed leg the chain was wrapped around. I was pretty sure it was oak and incredibly thick, so it wouldnât snap easily. There was a chance I could just break it or kick it hard enough that it broke, and I could get out that way. Iâd still have a shackle around my ankle and five feet of chain rattling behind me, but at least Iâd be free.
Iâd just crouched down to examine the chain links when I heard a noise outside. The sound of shuffling feet in front of the door. The sound of a lock sliding open.
At first, I thought it was Oliver, coming back to take the chain off and apologize. But as I listened, my stomach clenched. There was more than one shifter outside.
It could be more of the Silver Wolves. Maybe Oliver had gone to get them. But there wasnât enough time for him to have gone and come back if he was bringing others along with him.
Which meant it wasnât Oliver.
I heard the front door slam open, and I flinched. My heart thundered in my throat. I could smell three of them. And one of them bore an unpleasantly familiar scent of musk and earth.
Drake.
Theyâd found me. I didnât know how, but somehow, Bronâs cronies had caught up to me. My breathing went shallow and jagged. There was no way. It was impossible. Except clearly, it wasnât.
Suddenly, I wished Oliver had locked the bedroom door.
âTold you he wasnât here,â Drakeâs voice filtered into the bedroom. âI smelled his trail going down the path. But sheâs definitely still in here. Will, you guard the door. Make sure she doesnât get out.â
No, no, no, no, no, no.
It took a lot for me to be legitimately terrified, but I was right now.
