Cherise felt a bit of heat hit her cheeks when his blue eyes focused on her. Maybe Wanda and Izzie had been right. Maybe he was more than just being helpful and friendly.

Did she want that?

She honestly didn’t know. But the idea of going home to an empty house with that jerk out there knowing her address didn’t exactly appeal.

But Vince did.

It had been four long years since she’d had a man look at her the way he was. A tingle of something she’d almost forgotten went through her. Had her nodding her head before she could second-guess. “There’s the barbecue place on 43rd. It’s near the soccer field.”

“I know it. Would you like me to follow you?”

“I’d like that very much.”

The restaurant was ten minutes away. Cherise spent those ten minutes questioning herself and reminding herself that it was just a friendly dinner. There was nothing there, and there wasn’t going to be.

The last thing Max needed in his life right now was his mother getting involved with a strange man. He would just not take it well.

But as she pulled into the parking lot, Cherise admitted it to herself. Her son would probably be just fine with her having men friends; it was her that wasn’t.

She straightened her shoulders. But why shouldn’t she have a man who was a friend in her life?

She wasn’t dead. And James wouldn’t have wanted her to spend the rest of her life doing nothing except working and being there for the kids.

He’d be damned angry to even think about it. He’d loved her. He’d want her to have someone to depend on, to love.

To just be with.

She wasn’t saying that Vince was going to be that man, but maybe he was the first step?

Tonight would just be a trial run. That was it. Just to see if she was ready to do all of this again.
