"My father!" Emmett grinned at the messenger and tucked the scrawled note into his vest. He spun away from the entrance and up the stairs towards the library where he'd left Andrewe moments ago. "An—" He caught himself. "Your Highness?"
Empty silence met his query, the volume Andrewe had been pawing through without reading abandoned on the wingchair where Andrewe had been lounging. Emmett frowned, tucked the book away and left the room to continue his search. Andrewe wasn't usually one to slink off, preferring Emmett's company for amusement, so when Emmett had all but exhausted his search two hours later, he was starting to get concerned.
He wouldn't have even considered checking the kitchen; the afternoon was wet and warm, the stove was never at rest and Andrewe despised the humidity, so he was startled when he heard Andrewe's voice from within. Andrewe's muffled words were followed by Aleyn's bright laugh and Emmett smiled, turning quickly into the space.
"Your Highness," Emmett grinned. "I've been looking for you everywhere."
"We are making pie," Aleyn told him, holding out a dish with flour-drenched fingers. "Look! Strawberries! And we have rhubarb we need to use before it spoils. So the prince said we should make strawberry-rhubarb pie."
"We?" Emmett teased.
Aleyn grinned. "Well his Highness is watching. That's all the help I need."
"And perhaps you've had a good plan to make something special, Aleyn," Emmett said. "I have received word that my father has returned to port." He reached into his vest and pulled out the note. "He arrived yesterday and has bedded at the public house. The crew is doing the count and he has requested an audience for tomor—"
"He is not to attend at court," Andrewe cut Emmett short, picking at a thread on his cuff. "If he shows he will be sent away."
While Emmett's lips smiled at Andrewe, his brow pulled into a frown. "He has the king's procurement."
"I will discuss it with my father and have men sent down to the dock," Andrewe told him. "There is no requirement for him to join us at the castle."
"But ... your Highness ..." Emmett laughed a short, confused note. "He is my father."
Andrewe didn't reply.
"He's gone to great lengths to secure the products your family requested of him," Emmett insisted.
"And he will be compensated per our agreement," Andrewe said, waving Aleyn away. Aleyn did not hesitate. He grabbed a cloth, wiped his hands the best he could, and all but raced for the door.
Only when Aleyn was gone did Andrewe continue. "But he will wait for our contact and we will bring payment to him."
Emmett sat down hard. "Your Highness, he will be mortified. The disgrace will be obvious, not only to my father but to his men and the others he does commerce with. I don't understand?"
Andrewe looked up and levelled his eyes to Emmett's. "I do not want him in the castle attempting to take back that which is mine."
"Your Highness," Emmett looked quickly around the kitchen and he lowered his voice. "Andrewe.
