We were working nights on the evening of April 25th, 2006 when a call came in of a fatal officer-involved shooting at Broadway and East John Street on Capitol Hill.

When we arrived, a white man lay dead on the sidewalk.

This guy had apparently been standing on a corner before the shooting. He told another guy standing nearby that he planned to shoot the next police officer he saw. Fortunately, that guy called 911.

When the officers got there, they found the suspect standing on the street. As they approached, he pulled a .38 revolver and pointed it at them. They opened fire, killing him.

I examined the scene. The suspect’s gun was lying on the sidewalk a few feet from his body. It was an older revolver with a six-inch barrel.

I looked closely at the gun. I noticed an anomaly in the cylinder. I bent down for a closer look, shining my flashlight on the pistol.

An officer’s bullet had gone the wrong way down the cylinder, striking a round in the gun. It was unequivocal evidence that the gun had been pointed at the officers when they fired. Had it not been, it would have been physically impossible for the bullet to enter the cylinder.

The TV show Mythbusters did an episode on the shooting. They screwed it all up, claiming that the officer was armed with the revolver and that the shot entered an empty cylinder. In reality, the suspect was armed with the revolver, and the shot made by the officer entered into a cylinder loaded with a live round.

In the end, Mythbusters determined that the shot could have been made.

I know it could have been; I was there.
