Chapter Ten

“You’re doing a great job with those new mares from Amarillo. If I hadn’t seen your work for myself these past few weeks, I wouldn’t believe someone can do what you do with a horse. You have a true gift.” Chance’s words were spoken with all sincerity in his tone, and unblinking regard, as he sat across the table from Rio. They had stopped in at the local diner to grab a quick burger on their way back from an auction earlier that day.

“Thanks. I enjoy the work.”

“You’re a man of few words,” Chance noted with a grin. He moved his empty plate aside and folded his arms on the tabletop, all seriousness in his gaze on the man across from him. “Two things. First of all, and it’s none of my business, but I do apologize for the abrupt end to the ride and picnic last weekend. I sensed there was something wrong when you and Dee returned from exercising the horses. Whatever it was, I hope it can be worked out. And that is all I will say on the subject…since I’m sure my wife will be more vocal on this topic.” His smile was more apology than amusement.

“Second, I had an ulterior motive for having you go along with me to the auction today. It gave us some time to talk and that brings me to this. I want to make an offer to you of permanent employment. You know we can keep you more than busy with the horses…not only Braxton horseflesh, but from across the southwest, given the number of phone calls that come into my office wanting your services. I know you came into this being upfront about giving us three months of your time before you planned to move on. But I’ll make you a good deal. House and acreage included. Name your terms and we’ll draw up a contract.”

Rio took a long draw from his glass of iced tea, his mind in full forward gear. It wasn’t the first time Chance had broached the subject with Rio. He had managed to sidestep the issue, but he had a feeling that wasn’t going to work too much longer. And Rio’s mind was still on the merry-go-round. Coming to Braxton and facing the past and the ghosts and the man across from him…it should have been easier. He should have already moved down the road. But he was still in Braxton…for a variety of reasons he had tried to avoid looking at too closely.

He set the glass down on the table. “I appreciate the offer. It’s a good one for any cowboy. I have to admit your operation and the horses I’ve been able to work with…it’s been more than interesting. And hard to walk away from.”

“Then don’t. This is a good place to put down roots. Good people. And I had hoped you were finding some of them to your liking more than others.”

Rio’s gaze met his and he caught the shifting nod of Chance’s head in the direction of the door of the diner.
