CLEAN AIR

The largest area of a home, and the one that has the most immediate impact on health, is one that is commonly overlooked when cleaning: the air. We may consider the quality of outdoor air if we live in a heavily populated area or one with severe air pollution. Indoor air, however, which takes up more space by volume than any other area of a home and is taken into the body with every breath, is often left out of discussions about cleaning or greening the home.

Historically, indoor air quality has been a concern. Enclosed spaces led to poor air circulation, less fresh air, and, ultimately, health problems. Better sanitation and hygiene practices lessened these effects, but the current reliance on chemicals and synthetic products has led to other health issues related to indoor air quality.

Air pollution is the largest single environmental cause of illness in children worldwide and is the second leading cause of illness after poor sanitation and a lack of clean water. Indoor air pollution is ranked as one of the world’s largest health risks.152 In industrialized countries, where the average person spends between 80 and 90 percent of his or her time indoors,153 this is a major health concern.
