CHAPTER THREE

Wes looked up from his work in the bedroom as Dustin entered the room Sunday morning. He’d been doing the breakfast dishes while Wes got started on his surprise in here.

“I’m serious.” Dustin was clearly not gonna let this drop. “We should get a pet.”

“Babe, I love you, I really do. But we both travel too much for a dog, and you know it.” Wes continued with his project, reading the drill for the next hole.

“Not a dog, maybe. But something smaller and easier could be fun.”

“I don’t do reptiles and I did my time with hamsters and gerbils as a kid.” Setting the drill down for a moment, Wes studied him carefully. “Dustin…”

“Yeah?” He shifted from foot to foot.

“D, is this you changing your mind about kids? Like you ask for a puppy but what you really want is something else?”

Dustin studied the hardwood floor like it might have state secrets inscribed on it. “Apollo’s kids have grown on me, I’ll admit. But you’re right. We’re too busy right now to contemplate either dog or kids. I love working alongside you too much to want to give it up so that one of us could be home at all times.”

“I love being out in the field with you too. But this is me telling you straight that we can talk about the kid thing at any point in the future if you really do change your mind. We might not always travel this much.”

“Yeah.” Dustin scratched behind his ear. “I always thought I’d be single forever. And kid-free. But then I met you and everything changed. Now I love having a home together, somewhere to come back to. And yeah, I keep having these stray thoughts about what our future might look like. Years down the road. That sort of thing. Because I want to be with you forever, and thinking about growing older together makes me really happy.”

Wes got up off the floor and walked over to give him a hug. “I want to grow old together too. And we don’t have to decide right now what that future’s going to look like. I love our place here in D.C., but I’m open to other options, other possibilities. These days I just wanna enjoy the present—I wasn’t sure we’d even get this, and I just want to enjoy this time together.”

“Me too.” Dustin hugged him back. “And our present is pretty fucking awesome. The pet thing is more… I keep walking by that cat condo place down the street. The cats in the windows are super cute. And I figure we could handle a cat. It could go to the cat condos when we take long trips, and we could get a pet sitter for short things. A lot of our trips are pretty short.”

“True.”

Apparently taking that as some sort of okay, Dustin squeezed him tighter. “There’s a cat adoption thing going on today at the shelter. Special prices. We could just go, take a look. We don’t have to actually come back with a cat.
