“Everything okay?” I ask Brandon as he slides into the driver’s seat of his dad’s car and adjusts the seat.

“Yeah.”

“You’re not dizzy or nauseous?”

“Nope, why?” He tosses his bathing suit into the back seat and starts the SUV.

I take in his handsome profile and as his folks stand at the door to wave us off, I resist the urge to touch the scruff on his face. “You seemed to be in a very deep conversation with Casey. I thought something might be wrong, or that you told him about your concussion.”

“I’m actually feeling a lot better.” He grins at me. “Big brother stuff.”

“Keeping him on the straight and narrow, are you? Or giving him tips on how to charm the ladies?” I laugh, but Brandon doesn’t seem to find humor in what I’m saying. He didn’t seem to like it when I told his parents I was probably going to stay in Halifax either, but honestly, the more I think about it, the more I realize I can’t keep following him around. It’s pathetic, really.

Maybe distance is what it’s going to take for me to get over him, and Lord knows seeing him with Naomi every day might just be my undoing. But this week I decided to have fun with Brandon, which means I need to keep my emotions in check. There’ll be plenty of time for heartbreak when we return to the Academy and Naomi is on his arm. “I don’t remember Casey being so flirty before,” I add, keeping the conversation light. “What was up with that?”

“He knows a beautiful woman when he sees one.” His compliment curls around me like a comfy blanket, but I notice the stiffness in his body. I can’t help but think Casey said something to upset Brandon. Could it have been about me?

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

He tilts his neck to the side, stretching out his tight muscles, and shoots me a quick glance. “I pray for the girls at Stanford,” he says, shifting the conversation and adding playfulness back to his tone. I stare at him for a second and he looks straight ahead. “Head to get some glue before our hike?”

I turn over one of the books his mom gave me and scan the back. “Yup.” I read the blurb. “You know, with a little practice, you could be as good as your mom.”

His fingers tighten around the steering wheel, but I’m not entirely sure not being able to follow his passion is what’s bothering him. “I like your faith in me, but you heard my father. He’s holding out hope that I play for the Shooters.”

I reach across the seat and give his arm a squeeze. His muscles flinch, and once again I wonder what’s going on with him. “I know, I heard. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.”

I stare straight ahead and try to think of a way for him to follow in his mother’s footsteps, instead of what everyone else wants for him. Maybe I could look into publishing for him.
