Courtyard cool: Villa d’Este

One of the most beautiful courtyard apartment complexes in all of Los Angeles, the Villa d’Este was where Dean Jones and Carol Lynley lived in the 1963 Columbia film, Under the Yum Yum Tree. Erected in 1928, this haunting Mediterranean building is the work of the brothers F. Pierpont and Walter S. Davis and has seduced many Hollywood celebrities over the years with its tiled fountains, its jungly courtyards, and its peace and quiet. No wonder the exotic silent screen beauty Pola Negri felt at home here. And rumor has it that the great producer/director of historical epic films—C. B. DeMille—also kept an apartment at the Villa d’Este for his “private” purposes. Today, the building is beautifully maintained and remains one of West Hollywood’s poshest addresses.
